Every picture tells a story. Every story is someone's experience. Near or far, someone's life becomes everyone's story.

You may not have heard of Gibbs Smith, Publisher. We are not new to educational publishing, but we are new to North Carolina. For the past 37 years we have been publishing state history textbooks. We aim to "Reinvent Textbooks" and provide students with materials that are engaging and meaningful.

While we were creating an 8th grade North Carolina history book, we learned about a series of books originally created by North Carolina State University. Called the Living In Our World series, these 4th through 7th grade materials were first introduced in the late 1990s. They were received with great acclaim throughout the state and were revised, but never printed, in 2002. Hundreds of North Carolina educators and scholars developed the materials. Their main goal was to give teachers social studies materials that supported North Carolina's unique social studies curriculum.

Amazed by the care and quality of the materials created by these North Carolina educators, Gibbs Smith, Publisher teamed up with NC State to once again bring life to these books. The original materials have been completely redesigned and updated. They include new primary source activities, history timelines, short biographies of people from the past and present, and exciting support websites for each book. The series also includes an 8th grade North Carolina history textbook written by Pamela C. Grundy of Charlotte, with contributions from several educators across the state.

We are excited to share North Carolina Journeys with you. We hope you and your students enjoy all the adventures you can take with these great books.
